*Werbung / Advertisement. This post is sponsored by Weleda.

Today is all about creativity. After I finished my first cookbook a few months ago, I fell into a creativity low. Since I was never a creative mind as a child, I had the worst of my grades in art and crafts back in school, I did not really know how to beat this creativity low. So after sending the final edits to my editor, I felt empty and exhausted.

But after taking a creative break (I pre-planned a few blogposts these past weeks), and after a small vacation, I felt the energy and the creativity coming back to me. I started redecorating my home office, cleaned out cupboards and planned a bedroom update. It’s incredible what a few weeks off can do to your mind.

So when I received the new Weleda „Feel Good Shower“ as a PR-Sample, my mind came up with so many new creative ideas. Creating a recipe based on natural cosmetics was something I always wanted to do, because I love the idea that you can eat your skincare. Obviously, you cannot eat the Feel Good Shower, but at least it inspired this recipe. Ginger, sesame oil and lemon – all of these ingredients shaped this cold gazpacho. However, I used lemon instead of citronella (lemon grass), because I preferred the freshness of the lemons in this dish.

Creating this recipe was a blast, which boosted my creativity. It was so much fun combining the ingredients of the shower. Since it brings refreshment, relaxation and nourishment onto the body, I wanted to bring these things into the body. Due to the high temperatures at the moment, the recipe today had to be fresh and light. Let’s examine the two main ingredients in depth:

Ginger:

Ginger is rich in nutrients such as potassium, calcium and magnesium, folic acid and vitamin C.

Ginger soothes arthrosis-symptoms.

It is supposed to stabilize and decrease blood sugar levels.

Ginger reduces pain such as menstrual pain, it helps with nausea and soothes the stomach and intestine.

Sesame:

Sesame is one oft he best beauty foods.

It strengthens beautiful hair and skin.

Sesame is a complete protein, meaning it contains all essential amino acids.

The amino acids methionine, cysteine and tarine, which aid the production of collagen, which is one of the most important proteins for beautiful skin, hair and nails.

Sesame oil has always been used as massage oil in the Ayurveda treatments. It is very well absorbed by the skin, aids skin regeneration and is said to have sun-protecting properties.

Since you know that I only cooperate with companies that I trust, that share my values, that I use myself, I am super excited to have teamed up with the traditional German company. The Feel Good Shower is a special edition, because it has a completely new design than what we usually see on Weleda products. I love the summer-design by French illustration artist Marion Bonnet. According to the artist, she was inspired by a walk through her childhood when she drew the design. Since I was never able to draw even a decent elephant, I am always in awe of artists such as Marion Bonnet. The shower leaves your skin smelling fresh like ginger, it is vegan and Natrue-certified. It really brings you the summer feeling into the shower!

By the way, if you live in Germany, then hop over to the German version of this article, where I am having a giveaway for the Feel Good Shower and a Lanius x Weleda 100% organic cotton foulard scarf.

For everyone else, I present to you, this summer’s refreshing avocado-ginger-soup.

Attention, guys. Your breakfast is about to get 10 times better.

The reason is this super delicious jar of crunchy apple overnight oats that’s about to be your favorite new breakfast. Even better: this recipe is the ultimate proof that healthy breakfast requires zero effort. Are you as excited as I am?All you got to do is buy all oft he ingredients, although I’m betting that most of you already have all of them in your pantry. And then you’ll open the jar, put all of the ingredients into the jar, close the jar, and place it in the fridge overnight. I’ll put this into bullet points, so we can all remember it better ;-).

Cut the apples into small pieces.

Mix all of the ingredients in a jar.

Place that jar into the fridge.

Enjoy it in the morning with a smile.

I don’t think anyone can now argue that eating healthy in the morning is time-consuming or expensive. Of course, there are a few hacks that will take your overnight oats to the next level. For starters, I am a huge fan of apples in my overnight oats. Especially sweet and sour apples such as Honeycrunch. They add a natural sweetness and tangyness to the oats. Also, they are rich in vitamin C and the fiber pectin, which keep us satisfied longer. Meaning you won’t be craving that mid-morning snack anymore. Honeycrunch apples definitely kick your morning butt out of the door with this recipe, and they stay crunchy even if soaked overnight with the oats and oat milk.

The other overnight oat hack is cardamom. Now, I know that not everyone is too keen on cardamom. I think it needs to go into overnight oats, but you might want to start with a pinch and then work your way up as you get used to the taste.

I also like to make my overnight oats with oat milk lately, because it’s a naturally sweet plant-based milk and usually requires no additional sweetener. So if you’re currently fasting sugar (not fruit sugar), then you can still enjoy this delicious breakfast.

What are your favorite breakfast recipes in a jar? I’d love to hear it in the comments below.

„Stop! Don’t touch them!“ was all I could cry out the other day when Jannis came home from work. He automatically enters the kitchen when he comes home to see if there is anything he can sneak into his mouth.

He yells back „Don’t worry, I don’t like chocolate muffins anyways“.

My face, you guys. My face. Total disbelief. It was literally something that could have changed our entire relationship.

„Said no one ever. Who doesn’t like chocolate muffins?“.

Well. To be honest. Me. I was never really into chocolate muffins, because they were always too heavy for my taste. I preferred fruity cakes. At least before I discovered that you could use sweet potatoes in desserts and skip the refined sugar. It was a game-changing moment in my life and I have never looked back.

I don’t have the sweetest tooth, but sometimes, I really appreciate a decadent treat. However, I still like them to refer to my food philosophy, meaning made out of real food, unrefined ingredients, no refined sugar and plant-based whenever possible. I even want my sweet treats to be as good for the body as possible. Of course I still have unhealthy sweets from time to time – I call this my joy factor – but most of the time, I even prefer the taste of naturally sweetened cakes and sweets.

For this recipe I teamed up with REWE. This year, REWE started a big campaign to reduce sugar in their generic brands. The campaign losely translates to “You are sugar – how much sugar do you still need”? If you live in Germany, you might have seen this campaign in your local supermarket. I strongly believe that it was about time that one of the big players in the German food industry starts to unravel the truth about the high sugar consumption in our society. REWE started their sugar reducing efforts by introducing one of their “REWE Deine Wahl” products, a chocolate pudding, in different sugar reduced options. The consumer can vote online, which one they like best, and this product will hopefully replace the traditional version. It’s perhaps not the ideal approach, but it might raise awareness for the less informed consumer about how much sugar is actually hidden in our foods.

Of course this campaign won’t change the mass consumption of sugar over night, but perhaps it will give some consumers the last notch to start reducing sugar in their diet. The company has the goal to reduce the sugar content of all of their generic products by 2020 – which is already in two years, guys! More infos regarding REWE’s efforts to reduce sugar can be found here.

Generally, I believe it’s great that REWE starts the fight against our sugar consumption as the very first German “Big player”. Health coaches, startups and bloggers like me would never be able to reach a crowd as big REWE does. Therefore, if we want word to spread, we rely on big companies such as REWE to use their logistics to reach the consumers all over the country. At the same time, whenever I walk through the REWE grocery stores, I keep seeing all of the sugar bombs that are currently sold to the consumer in these stores. I would have appreciated it, if REWE had replace their chocolate pudding with the sugar reduced version without asking the consumer first. However, this would have undercut the consumer’s choice. And also, I highly doubt that the average consumer will like the option with the least sugar, because the taste buds of our society are conditioned to favor sweetened over unsweetened. Resetting the taste buds takes time and dedication… something that few people possess these days.

In my “Bullerbü”-world, no one buys chocolate pudding. We all make our own, naturally sweetened pudding. But I know that this vision is far from being realized, and it might never come true. That’s why sugar-reducing advocates like me need big firms like REWE to be willing to reduce the sugar content in their products.

Of course, REWE knows that I don’t eat store-bought chocolate pudding. So they asked me to create a naturally sweetened chocolate recipe, to show that sugar reduction does not equal a sacrifice of taste.

In this recipe, I used sweet potatoes, applesauce and just a teeny bit (45g to be exact) of coconut sugar. I have tried them without the coconut sugar, and most of my recipe testers were not too fond of the taste. The coconut sugar and maple syrup worked better for them. I also liked them without the extra sugar, but my taste buds have really gotten used to close to zero added sugars.

*This post is sponsored by Honeycrunch.

I have been blogging for almost three years now, but I am always blown away by how many visitors my blog gets in January. It’s by far my busiest month of the year. That’s why I love January. Not because of my blog visitors, but because I love the feeling that’s in the air after New Year’s Eve. It’s a feeling of a new beginning. The feeling of a fresh start. The feeling of joy and excitement for life and the new year.

I’ve been getting lots of questions if I couldn’t do a January challenge. Such as a „30 days of no sugar“ or „30 days vegan“ or „30 days of healthy recipes“ or „30 days being dairy-free“. But somehow, that doesn’t feel like me. I don’t like challenges. Never have, never will. They feel so much like diets.

And diets is something that we definitely do not like.

The problem with diets is that they are bound on a certain amount of days. I dream of a world, where I can encourage people (you!) to make long-term changes in their diets. Or at least change their perception and understanding of diet and health. Once it clicks that diet and medicine are closely related, then everything will fall into place.

If you love challenges and if you need challenges, then I challenge you to eat Heavenlynn Healthy recipes for 30 days. Then you’ll have it all at once: plant-based, dairy-free, gluten-free, sugar-free and vegan. And if you’ve been health-conscious for a while now, then you’ve probably been living a year-long healthy eating challenge last year.

To continue your healthy eating progress in January, I brought you this delicious cauliflower apple power salad. It’s loaded with vitamins, minerals and nutrients, and it tastes incredible due to the addition of Honeycrunch* apples. Honeycrunch is a new apple that originated in France, but that is now also grown locally near my home. As lover of apples, I love testing new breeds, and Honeycrunch really is bursting with flavor, balancing the art of being sweet and tangy at the same time.

This salad definitely is an aromatic explosion – I know I tend to exagurate sometimes, but trust me on this. You need to make this salad asap! Adding Honeycrunch to really adds the … well … crunch! Seriosuly! If you want the whole apple experience then you need to make the apple sauce dressing, too! It’s like the fuji apple salad from Panera minus all the artificial add-ons. Natural and simple and made only with local ingredients, at least most of them.

So who’s making this salad this weekend?

*This post is sponsored by Alnavit.

It’s Thanksgiving week, so naturally, this winter spiced apple chocolate cake is just what you need to for a healthy Thanksgiving dessert. Every year, Jannis and I plan on having a Friendsgiving dinner, but then somehow we always forget about Thanksgiving. I suppose it is because it’s just not our tradition to have, though both of us have lived in the United States for a considerable amount of time.Maybe next year. Maybe.

But this cake is not just a delicious Thanksgiving treat, it’s absolutely suitable for every Sunday cake get-together in December. I made it with my all-time favorite Alnavit* organic basic gluten-free flour mix, because it is one of the few flour mixes that is made with whole-grain ingredients: brown rice flour, millet flour and a little bit of corn starch, and it’s guaranteed that your gluten-free cake will be a success.

Also, do you remember my hot superfood chocolate from last year? Alnavit basically sells this Superfood hot chocolate in a box now, it’s called KakaoGenießer (organic drinking chocolate) and it’s made with raw cacao, turmeric, ginger and cardamom. When I told Steffi from Alnavit about my winter spiced apple cake idea, we both instantly loved the idea of using the cacao powder mix in this cake. So easy, so good!

I know that many people keep asking me, where to find Alnavit products. I am quite lucky, because I live right next to a Budni and a Müller supermarket, which both sell the products in Northern Germany. Recently, Lüneburg also got a brand new Alnatura supermarket, which carries the entire Alnavit product range – good for Alnavit, bad for my wallet… You can find a whole list of shops with Alnavit products in their shop finder.

Now, what makes this cake a healthy alternative to traditional cakes? First of all, it’s made only with natural ingredients such as whole-grain flour, which stabilizes your blood sugar level and keeps your energy levels up. The opposite would be that commonly known food low, which many of us experience about an hour or so after an empty carb-excessive lunch, when we start craving sweets due to a drop in blood sugar levels. This cake is also naturally sweetened with a banana and coconut bloosom sugar, which also keep your blood level steadier than refined sugar. However, just because this cake contains healthy ingredients, does not mean that it’s a free pass to finish it all by yourself. Even healthier treats should be enjoyed in moderation for them to actually have a healthy effect.

On a last note, I just wanted to tell you that I have sucessfully passed my exam to become a holistic nutrition and health coach. Thank you all so much for your support these past weeks, especially on social media. Now enjoy this cake and let me know if you’ve made it on social media using #heavenlynnhealthy.

Have you ever thought about where mushrooms come from? I recently had the pleasure to visit a local mushroom producer from REWE*, and he showed me the whole process of modern mushroom production.

First things first, the mushrooms that you find in the supermarket have never seen a forest in their lifetime. It’s an industrial process that allows mushroom producer to meet the demand of the consumers. Only few of us still have the time or the knowledge to pick mushrooms on the forest, hence, mushroom producers like Dohme in Lower Saxony enable us to eat mushrooms whenever we want to.

REWE Regional Ambassador – a matter of my heart

Eating locally grown food is a matter of my heart. I’m not saying that I’m perfect – heaven forbid – but since I work with and like to eat food a lot, I want to know where my food comes from. That’s why I love the REWE campaign that aims to make our locally grown food more transparent. You might have seen the portraits of local farmers in your REWE market, or you may have noticed the yellow REWE Regional logo that labels all locally grown products. I think it’s a great initiative that I absolutely support.

As a REWE ambassador, I get to visit local farmers this year and learn how they grow their crop. Even though I grew up on the countryside, these visits are always so interesting to me, because there is so much that I do not know about local agriculture. Last time I visited a strawberry farm, and this time, I learned all about the production of mushrooms.

The four phases of mushroom production

Growing mushrooms is not as easy as it may seem. A lot has to do with the right temperature, the right resources and lots of space. The first phase of mushroom production is the mixture of water, hay, and horse dung. Together they undergo a process that creates heat and steam, and eventually turns into a substrate that is rich in nutrients, a breeding ground for mushrooms. In the big halls that you see on the picture, the mixture has to be moved from left to right constantly to ensure the best results. In the second phase, the breeding ground has to be freed from unwanted bacteria. This happens with heat, similar to pasteurization. During the third phase, the mushroom spores are seeded so they can grow through the breeding ground. The whole process takes roughly 8 weeks before the mushrooms can be harvested. At Dohme, this happens by human hand – every single mushroom!

Mushroom production and sustainability

Before visiting the mushroom production, I was sceptical about industrial agriculture and sustainability. Though I am not an expert at sustainable agriculture, I leaned that the mushroom production is more sustainable than I thought. First of all, Dohme uses no chemicals for their work. Mushrooms only grow on dead organic material of horse dung, water and hay, which makes a substrate that resembles forest grounds – no chemicals necessary. They also use bio gas for heating and cooling, and photovoltaic for parts of their energy needs. Dohme is also working on new packagings for the mushrooms to eliminate plastic use. It may not be perfectly sustainable yet, but it’s definitely a beginning.

Mushrooms and their amazing health benefits

The healing powers of mushrooms have been known to our ancestors for hundreds of years. Especially in the Chinese medicine, it is common to use mushrooms for treating illnesses. Even if you do not use mushrooms for medical purposes, they contain lots of nutrients such as proteins, and also micronutrients such as potassium, and even iron. Yet another reason to enjoy mushrooms on a regular basis, don’t you think?

I hope that I was able to give you a quick overview of how mushrooms are grown and harvested. It’s so interesting to learn about how our food ends up on our table, don’t you agree? By the way, I wanted to end this post with a quick “did you know…?”. Did you know that you shouldn’t wash mushrooms? If you want, you can brush them lightly, but washing them will decrease their flavor. Now you know how to properly prepare mushrooms.

If you live in Germany and grocery shop at REWE, then you will now know where your mushrooms come from. It’ll make for a good story at the dinner table, believe me.

Of course I also brought you a new and super easy recipe along with all this information about mushrooms. It’s such an easy weekday dish, and it’s just waiting for you to give it a try.

*Werbung. Advertisement. This post is brought to you by Alpro.

A few weeks ago, I had a sudden craving for waffles. If this happens, then there is only one thing a food blogger can do: make coconut waffles. This time with the delicious coconut drink from Alpro. Or first: make waffle batter. I did exactly that – before realizing that my waffle maker was at my parents house. Great, Lynn. Just great. So I was sitting there, eating my raw waffle batter, when my mother called. „Darling, what are you doing?“. „I’m sitting here eating raw waffle batter. How about you?“. That’s how the conversation started. It ended with my entire family standing in my doorway with the waffle batter and my grandmother Helga.

Eating plant-based plays a big role in my life. That’s why these waffles are made with only the best ingredients: oats, buckwheat, peanut butter and of course plant-based milk. For me, eating plant-based is more than just eating vegan. First of all, I am not vegan as I still eat honey and cheese, and secondly, eating plant-based is a choice I made for my health. Ever since I started incorporating plant-based drinks from Alpro in my life, I just feel much better, especially in the mornings. Plant-based milk is simply full of nutrients – did you know that almond milk contains a lot of vitamin E (the beauty vitamin)? So I chose plant-based drinks because they make me feel my best.

I also love that my family is becoming more and more open to plant-based drinks. When we were younger, our naturopath would have us drink soy drinks for a certain amount of time, and since it was kind of forced upon us, my sisters and I have always had a mixed relationship with soy drinks. Luckily, Alpro offers so much more than just soy drinks. After I graduated from college in the U.S., I was already so used to drinking only almond and cashew milk, that Alpro really helped me stick to my plant-based diet when I moved back to Germany. They were the first brand that I bought back here in Lüneburg and they have been a big part of my diet ever since.

While I was decorating my tiny tiny living room table, Jannis was in the kitchen making the waffles. My grandmother was watching me closely as she had never seen my food blogging activities in action. She was so proud of making it up all the way to our top-level apartment, that she did not even care about me taking photos of the waffles.

In fact, she loved being my model, my hand model and my recipe tester. I even served her coconut drink latte, which she happily enjoyed. I guess I am pretty lucky that even my grandmother likes what I serve, even though it is quite different from what she is used to. She even ate two coconut waffles, although she had already had cake back at home.

I was actually surprised that my grandmother waited so patiently for her waffles and coffee. She even hand-modeled for me, as you can see on the pictures. I’ll treasure this photo forever, I believe. Look at her elegant hand, and look at her smile. Approaching the 90s with grace and a strong will to live. I never thought that I could ever make my 89-year old grandmother try something so exotic such as a coconut latte. But she took a sip and approved with a simple „very apart“. I don’t think I would have ever thought that I could make my grandmother enjoy the things that I eat regularly and with great pleasure.

Oma Helga also loved the coconut peanut butter waffles. She even had two, even though she had already had cake at home. The great thing about these waffles with Alpro coconut drink is that they are good for your body and easy to digest. So you can enjoy another one without feeling guilty (just as my grandmother did).

To say that I love these Sunday afternoons is an understatement. All you need is a simple yet delicious waffle recipe, coffee with coconut or almond drink and a grandmother who loves to tell a story. My dad always teases that you need a license for Oma Helga as she is really something. You can be assured that life with her is anything but boring. But that afternoon she simply enjoyed being in my small apartment, eating healthy food and chatting about her grandchildren and her weird jobs.

What I am also so thankful for, is a family who supports me and who loves to try my healthy and usually plant-based creations. My dad is my biggest critic, and he will tell me quite straight forward if he does not like something. He has even spat out one of my cakes before. He is being totally honest.

But he loved these waffles, and even took a sip from my coconut latte. I don’t think he will be having coconut lattes on a regular basis from now on, but he had to admit that they tasted good. That’s all I needed to hear.

Now, if you also have a crazy family such as mine, then this recipe is for you. It’s best to be shared with friends, and you do not even have to tell them that it’s healthy. They won’t be able to tell. You can simply enjoy the time with them, chat, and relax. Fort he waffle recipe, you can chose any Alpro plant-based drink that you prefer. I have tried it with the regular coconut drink and the fresh one. Both waffles were delicious.

For the coconut latte, I did not bother to write down the recipe. All you need to do is steam the coconut drink and add a shot of espresso. Simple as that.

For 6 coconut peanut butter waffles:

Have you ever tried finding 100% buckwheat noodles in a regular supermarket or asian store? I’ve tried and failed misreably. All “buckwheat”-noodles that I found had a 20% buchwheat and 80% wheat label. To say that I was frustrated is probably and understatement. Sometimes labels are just so misleading. That’s exactly why I try to make most of my dishes with 100% natural ingredients. Making pasta, however, is simply too time-consuming, so I have to rely on high-quality brands that use the least amount of ingredients with the highest amount of flavor and nutrients.

But like I said, those brands can be so hard to find. One brand that I found and trust is Alnavit*. It’s a small almost family-sized business near Darmstadt, specialized in allergy-friendly and wholesome foods such as pasta, flour, bread mixes and gluten-free (and healthy!) snacks. I found Alnavit a few months ago, and I have been a big fan of their pasta products ever since.

If you’ve been following me for a while now, you know that I do not make recommendations light-hearted. If I recommend something – be it a company, a recipe, a blogger or a kitchen gadget – then I truly and with all of my heart support that brand and their mission. Alnavit is one of those companies, and I am 100% confident that you will feel the same way about their products as I do. The product that introduced me to Alnavit was their 100% buchwheat spaghetti, and I am so happy to have created a recipe featuring their signature pasta.

What makes this pasta recipe truly special is the combination of buckwheat and miso – a combination that is very common in Japan. Studies show that some of the oldest and healthiest people on this earth live in Japan, and most of them even follow a holistic natural wholesome diet. Now, I don’t know if buckwheat noodles and miso will let you live longer, but I do know that the taste will bring you joy. At least, it did for me!

The miso-cashew-sauce really has the potential to kick my peanut-lime sauce of its throne – that’s how good it is. Miso is a fermented paste traditionally made of soy beans, but you can also make miso with rice, lupins or peas. Miso is very rich in nutrients and it contains all essential amino acids – making it a complete plant-based protein. It’s become one of my stable foods and I could not recommend it more.

As I am writing this, I am already craving these buckwheat spaghetti with miso-cashew-sauce again, but before I will share the recipe, I have a very exciting giveaway for all German, Austrian and Suisse readers:

Spicy Roasted Almonds as the perfect travel companion.

I just returned from my trip to Bali, so this is my first blog post after my long-anticipated vacation. My trip to Bali was a dream come true. We stayed in the most magical AirBnB and yoga hotels (which I will tell you all about in my Bali blog posts), and simply enjoyed some relaxing days in the jungle – a first for me, because while my boyfriend and I had a long-distance relationship for over five years, we spent every Penny to visit each other. Now we finally saved up some money to start exploring Asia. Always behind the time, Lynn, but that’s ok. Like I mentioned in my previous post, I am currently running a small series about my favorite natural and healthy snacks. „Embracing Nature’s Goodness“ is what I like to call it. In my first post with California Almonds* I talked all about the health benefits of almonds, and this post will be all about why almonds are my preferred travel snack, and how I like to make almonds a little bit more fun.

Since I love travelling just as much as I love to cook healthy food, it’s a no-brainer that I also try to stay healthy while touring the world. Interestingly, my mother recently told me about a conversation she had with her yoga group about the topic of healthy eating while traveling. Apparently, it is a lot easier for her and her friends to stay healthy at home, but it seems nearly impossible to eat and stay healthy while on vacation.

This is exactly the reason why I – whether I am going on a day trip or a longer journey – do my research online to find healthy restaurants or cafés in advance. I also always take some healthy snacks with me – preferably a bag of almonds. Eating about a handful of almonds a day gives me the nutrients I need to make it to the next larger meal. Packing almonds in your purse while on-the-go, will save you from those instant sugar cravings, and are a lot healthier than convenient products that only consist of empty carbs.

The protein in almonds keeps us satisfied longer:

The great thing about almonds is that they are bursting with nutrients as I previously mentioned in this post. They also consist of valuable fiber and healthy fatty acids, as well as protein, made up of amino acids. The body can use those amino acids to build and maintain a healthy muscle mass or even to fill up our reserves.

A handful of almonds (about 23) contain 6 grams of protein, 3 grams of fiber and 9 grams of unsaturated fatty acids, all the nutrients we need to survive the (hopefully positive) travel stress. The proteins in the almonds really help fight energy lows, and the fiber helps us to stay satisfied longer – preventing us from buying the first convenience food that we come across.

Another plus is that almonds are available in every city, (almost) every country on the planet and are even sold in smaller stores in the countryside. They are also known everywhere, and you do not even need to find special health stores to purchase them in.

So, now that you are an expert when it comes to almonds, I quickly want to add that almonds are of course not the only healthy snack out there. But they are my number one choice for quick and easy snacks. If you pair them with fresh fruits or vegetables that you cut at home, you have yourself a complete snack with everything that you need.

To spice things up a little, I’ve come up with a fun way to roast your almonds, inspired by my recent trip to Bali: Spicy Roasted Almonds. Bali is an amazing destination if you love food and spices – cinnamon, cardamom, pepper, cacao, ginger, turmeric – all these spices can be found growing in the Balinese plantations and forests. As much as I would have loved to add turmeric to this mix, I decided against it, because it will definitely turn your hands yellow. And that’s not exactly something that you want while traveling. If you love turmeric a lot though, then go for it – but don’t blame me for yellow hands ;-).

The mix can be easily carried in a reusable box or paper bag, and it definitely is the perfect travel companion. Feel free to play around with the spices that you like – I really like mine a bit spicier, but if you like it sweet, you could easily sub the coconut oil with maple syrup. The almonds keep for at least a week, so they are perfect for a weekend-trip or whatever plans you have this summer.

Enjoy!

Before I end this post, I quickly want to mention that it is not always allowed to transport food from one country into the other (especially with air travel), so be sure to eat your snacks on the plane before entering another country to prevent being called out by customs. (Happened to me when I forgot I still had a banana in my bag from when I left the Dominican Republic.)
