Pear and Hazelnut Porridge for a healthy start in the morning.

Thank you for all your warm comments regarding my blog birthday under my last post. It’s so crazy that Heavenlynn Healthy is already two years old. Time really flies by. I did a little poll regarding what your favorite recipes from my blog are, and it was pretty clear that many of you especially like my porridge recipes. So this post is dedicated to all of you, my readers from all over the world.

To be honest, I never expected my porridge recipes to be the most popular ones on the blog as I can never follow any porridge recipe. I always improvise because I never have time in the morning to follow a step by step recipe. So I was very surprised that many of you appreciate healthy breakfast recipes. From now on I will try to upload one breakfast recipe per month.

So now to this delicious pear and hazelnut porridge. Since it’s still winter here in Germany, I try to keep my porridge toppings as seasonal as possible. Well, obviously blueberries and blackberries are NOT in season right now, but I had them for a different photo shooting and needed to use them (which I did not mind, tbh as I LOVE all kinds of berries). They also just look so crazy pretty in porridge pictures.

I’ve been trying out different types of plant-based milk lately, and I must say that my favorite is still oat milk, which I use for porridge most mornings. However, I have come to love hazelnut milk, too, because it tastes a little bit like nutella if you mix it with a bit of raw cacao. It really tastes delicious, and if you like plant-based milk, then you will love hazelnut milk. It also goes really well with the pear and almond butter (though of course you could use hazelnut butter as well).

I do feel kind of silly posting a simple recipe like this, but I can most definitely say that it’s absolutely delicious!

Turmeric porridge to start the new year 2017 right!

The Holidays are over, and I took a few days off as well, so I am feeling totally energized and ready for the new year! During the days between Christmas and New Year’s Eve, I worked out a lot, especially in the morning. My family is pretty active, so all of us usually started the last weeks with a morning run with Balu, and my boyfriend and I then completed the run with a yoga session. It was so nice to get our bodies moving after all of the food and festivities around Christmas. This turmeric porridge was my go-to porridge recipe in the last four weeks, so I thought it would be the perfect first recipe for the new year 2017!

I am the biggest fan of turmeric as you may have noticed. I add it to all of my recipes (here’s the evidence turmeric latte, turmeric and vanilla post yoga pot, turmeric smoothie, cucumber salad with beluga lentils and turmeric vinaigrette and much more), and recently I’ve started to add it to my porridge, too.

I was inspired by this recipe during my latest Amsterdam visit, where I finally got to go Lavinia Good Food, one of the cutest and most delicious restaurants in the city. They served a delicious turmeric porridge, so I just had to recreate it! Thank you, Lavinia, for the inspiration. By the way, if you’re planning your city trips this year, you have got to add Amsterdam to your list. It’s one of the healthiest cities in Europe, and I have just completely fallen in love with the city! I love it so much, that I’ve written a complete Amsterdam City Guide about my experiences in this lovely city.

I totally love this porridge in the winter months as it is so full of warm spices. Turmeric has many health benefits, which is why it is the number one health spice used in the ayuvedic kitchen. It is commonly known for its anti-inflammatory properties, high antioxidant amount and phytonutrients. Historically it has been helping people with tooth aches, menstrual pains, bruises or colics. Most of the health benefits are traced back to the main compound, curcumin, which also gives turmeric the bright yelllow color.

Several medical studies have reven related turmeric, and its compound curcumin, to cancer prevention of colon, skin or pancreatic cancer. Of course most of those studies have used large amounts of turmeric to achieve the desired results, which is unrealistic if you don’t want to eat an entire turmeric root every day (trust me, it would almost be like eating an entire ginger root). So all we can do is start small, and increase our daily turmeric intake by adding it to porridge, lattes, curries, sauces or dressings.

As you can see, Balu also very much wanted a taste of it, but unfortunately porridge is not for dogs. I just thought it would be cute to add to this post, as the new year is all about happiness and joy, and he brings me so much joy!

It’s this time of the year again: as the leaves start falling, the days get shorter and the mornings colder, I have been craving spiced fall porridge again. I don’t know why I have not posted it last fall, but I am glad I didn’t because now I’ve had just about a year to perfectionate it. With every bite of this delicious spiced porridge, you can feel fall on your tongue. The flavors of this season are so warm, comforting and sensual that I can hardly wait for it to be completely and totally fall again. It’s by far my favorite season and I am longing for it to never end at this moment of the year. As the days get shorter, I love eating healthy and fast breakfasts in the morning, because we all love healthy fast food right? That’s why this is my entry for the lovely Janine from Nuts and Blueberries who is running a little blogger carnival with the motto #HealthyFastFood 4. On October 1st Janine will publish all the entries of her blogger carnival, so if you’re looking for healthy but fast food inspiration, be sure to pay Janine’s wonderful blog a visit.

When I write about fall, I “fall” into a melancholic mood , a good mood, as I remember all the good memories that this season has provided me with during my lifetime. But there are also some unpleasant memories that I associate with fallen leaves, so I thought I’d do a little re-capturing of what fall meant to me as a child:

Here’s what I loved about fall when I was a child:

making little animals with chestnuts

coming home in dirty rubber boots and jackets

lantern walks

kites flying in the brisk air

decorating windows with pressed leaves

coming home from ballet lessons and eating hot pumpkin soup

reading books while cuddled up in a blanket

oatmeal

Saturdays

Here’s what I hated about fall as a child:

raking the leaves in my grandparent’s backyard

riding my bike home from school in the rain

track & field practice outside (also in the rain)

Sundays

I used to be (or I still am) quite a sensitive person. So as a child, Sunday nights were the worst for me as they meant that the weekend was over and that I had to be back in school in just a few hours. It’s not that I didn’t like school, I loved it, but I was just so sad that the weekend was over. However, what I loved about fall was that my mom would get up extra early on school days to prep us a fresh orange juice and porridge so we would get in all the nutrients for an eventful school day. I remember that I did not instantly fall in love with porridge (I was more the chocolate granola kind of kid), but I ate it from time to time, and now I could not imagine starting my fall and winter days with anything else.

This spiced fall porridge is not only heavenly creamy, it’s also loaded with goodness that will fill you up on cold mornings. The warm oats melt in your mouth and the spices such as ginger, nutmeg or allspice are so comforting and exactly what you need in the morning. Porridge really fills you up, too, so it’s a great breakfast for blood sugar regulation as you won’t get energy lows around mid-moring.

What’s you favorite breakfast in the colder seasons? And what are your best and worst childhood fall memories?

Today I’d like to introduce you to a new breakfast favorite of mine: raw strawberry peach buckwheat porridge. As we are getting closer to summer, I feel myself craving something other than oats for breakfast, because everyone needs a change sometimes, right? I’ve tried raw buckwheat porridge a couple of weeks ago, and instantly fell in love. Buckwheat is such a wonderful pseudo grain, that keeps you satisfied for hours! I knew buckwheat was a wholesome, protein-rich pseudo grain, but I had no idea it keeps you that full. Say good-bye to mid-morning cravings and sugar lows – this raw strawberry peach buckwheat porridge will be your new best friend in the morning.

When you try raw buckwheat porridge for the first time, it’s important that you pair it with something sweet and delicious like strawberries and peaches, apple or banana or fresh summer berries. Strawberry and peach is my favorite flavor combination in the summer, it brings back so many great memories of great vacations, home made ice cream and the beach.

Buckwheat has amazing health benefits such as the ability to lower blood pressure and cholesterol. It also contains all 9 essential amino acids, making it a complete protein. The high protein and fiber content are responsible for keeping you satisfied for hours, giving you lots of energy for a successful morning. I like to prepare the raw buckwheat porridge at night, so it can soak over night. In the morning, all you have to do is to throw all the ingredients into a food processor. You can easily put it in a jar and take it to work with you, too.

I’m sorry for this super short recipe description, but I just did not have time to write a whole lot this week. As some of you know, I’ve started my Masters a few weeks ago, and it has already kept me busy, especially since I am also trying to work full time for the family business. Anyway, no excuses, there is always time for food. Especially now, when days get darker and the temperatures get colder I need a proper breakfast in order to be productive throughout the entire day. Now that does not mean that I have a huge amount of time to prepare it in the morning. In fact, I am a strong believer that breakfast can be prepared quickly without having to sacrifice on nourishment or goodness. Porridge is a great way to make a highly nutritious breakfast in no time. This quick vanilla porridge literally takes 3 minutes to prepare. Everybody has 3 minutes in the morning, right? The porridge needs another 10 minutes to sit, during which you can get ready for the day, because you don’t even have to watch it. Those of you following me on Instagram have probably noticed my addiction to coconut porridge in the morning. Well, I still love coconut porridge, but oh man, this vanilla porridge has great potential to become my next big thing. Vanilla is just perfect for this time of the year, especially now that we are getting closer and closer to Christmas. It is so comforting and really warms you from the inside.

I buy my vanilla powder in a jar, but you can also use traditional vanilla pods if you like. I know that vanilla is not the cheapest, but a little jar of vanilla powder lasts me for many months, and the flavor is definitely worth it. If you love porridge and vanilla, then you are going to love this one. Trust me on this.

Those of you who’ve been following me on Instagram may have noticed my slight obsession with porridge. I love all sorts of porridges: almond milk porridge, oat milk porridge, blueberry porridge, pink raspberry porridge, apple cinnamon porridge – you name it. My newest obsession is coconut porridge, which is the creamiest most delicious thing I’ve ever eaten for breakfast. I am not exaggerating, it really is such a delicious breakfast that provides you with enough energy to make it through a busy morning at work or at school. Porridge is also a cheap way to start your day in an extremely healthy way. Oats can be really cheap when bought in bulk, and they also don’t have to be organic in order to be healthy. If you cook your porridge with more water than milk, you don’t even need a lot of pricey plant-based milk in order to eat a plant-based breakfast.

I admit that eating porridge for breakfast may not seem all that exciting. However, you can make it exciting by topping your porridge with delicious and flavorful toppings such as fruits, superfoods or nut butters. I prefer a mixture of all of the above to make my porridge more exciting and colorful. It’s actually quite fun to play around with different flavors and spices, like apple cinnamon or vanilla and almond. I am sure everyone’s taste is different so I’ll just provide you with my basic coconut porridge recipe and you’re welcome to play around with different toppings and flavors. If you need more porridge inspiration then be sure to follow me on Instagram, which is where I share at least three or four porridge bowls a week.
